Get to know Africa’s Indigenous Entrepreneur

Africa is rated among the world oldest human technological achievements. Recently, Africa’s technology has continued to grow persistently because Africa houses the youngest population in the world. Africa embarrassed technology as a result of the strong desire to solve socio-economic problems through industrialization.

Among these Africans is Dr Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma (OFR) popularly known as Innoson. He was born into the family of Mr and Mrs Chukwuma Mojekwu in Nnewi, Anambra state of Nigeria in the year 1961. He was the youngest of six children. Innoson is the CEO and founder of Innoson Group of companies with its subsidiaries; Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) nicknamed Pride of African Road, and Innoson Technical & Industrial Company Limited.

Although Innoson was not born with a silver spoon, his company is well known in Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Sierra Leone and other countries because of his creativity, hard work and business acuity. He ventured into trading in motorcycle spare parts after his education and in 2007, he was unsatisfied with the ever-increasing cost of tokunbo (fairly used) vehicles, spaces occupied by obsolete imported vehicles and price of brand new ones. This prompted him into manufacturing of affordable and reliable commercial automobiles, utility vehicles and passengers cars in collaboration with Chinese auto manufacturers as a result of high demand in the country.

In 2009, there was a public display of some of the products at the Nnewi International Auto Trade fair held in Beverly Hills hotel and since then he never relents in showing his entrepreneurial talent. He figures out the needs of his people and strives towards providing solutions.
Innoson uses the concept of regionalization while considering the local taste and forechoice of the consumers with 70% being produced locally and others sourced from China, Germany and Japan.

He always bears in mind his culture when manufacturing a product and employed about 7400 indigenous labourers. For instance, in December 2019, he released three new vehicles of which one is called Innoson IVM Ikenga (Ikenga which is a symbol of kingship in Igbo land). Mercy Eke, the first female winner of Big Brother Naija is it’s brands Ambassador.

Today Innoson is one of the ten inaugural member of the Bank of Industry Hall of fame, the most outstanding indigenous entrepreneur in the manufacturing sector and an Honorary of National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines as and Agriculture due to advancement in technology.
