Read this before you apply
If you know you won't have time to contribute at least one or two articles a week, please don't apply.
We need people who will dedicate the time to write and submit at least one article every week. This matters more than anything else on this page.
The desk
AVO is a magazine about what's happening in Southern Africa, across three desks: Fashion, Creative and Sports. We're building it back up, and we want the people who actually live in each scene writing about it.
For Fashion we're looking for six contributors.
How it works
You pitch stories, interview people, write them up and work with an editor to get them ready. Editors decide what gets commissioned and published, so not every pitch makes it, but you'll always get a straight answer.
The money, straight up
Contributing is voluntary right now, so there's no pay. AVO is working towards earning from the magazine itself (advertising, sponsored articles, partnerships). When that happens we intend to offer contributors paid terms, in writing, that you can take or turn down. That's an intention, not a promise, and we can't say when.
If a fee is ever agreed for a specific piece, it's put in writing before it's published.
What you get now
Your name on your stories, an author page that shows you as a Fashion Contributor, an editor who works on your pieces with you, in-person training, access to AVO's online academy, and a place to build a name in your lane.
What you will do
- Write and submit at least one article every week, for the Fashion desk
- Pitch stories that fit the Fashion desk and AVO's direction
- Interview people and write features, profiles, reviews and opinion
- Work with your editor and hit the deadlines you agree to
- Stay reachable on WhatsApp, where the team coordinates
- Join at least one virtual meeting with the editorial team every week
- Keep your author profile and contact details up to date
What we are looking for
- You can commit to writing and submitting at least one article every week, and you care about fashion
- Every word is yours. We don't allow AI writing: AI can help you check spelling and grammar, transcribe your own recording or do background reading, but it can't draft or write any part of a story, a quote or a headline. Work that breaks this rule isn't published
- You write well in English
- Something we can read: published work, a blog, a portfolio or a short sample
- You're accurate and fair, and you follow our Contributor Terms
- You have permission for any photos or material you send
- You're fine with the unpaid arrangement for now
- The application asks for a PDF: a CV, or a one-page note with links to your work
