These Terms of Use apply to africasveryown.com and the AVO newsletter. Africa’s Very Own Magazine (“AVO”, “we”, “us” or “our”) is a digital publication owned and operated by Digital Thread Proprietary Limited. By using the website you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.
Age
Anyone can read AVO. You must be 18 or over to subscribe to the newsletter, use our forms or contribute.
Using AVO
You are welcome to read, share links to and quote from AVO for personal, non-commercial use and for comment, criticism or news reporting, as the law allows. Please do not:
- copy, republish or sell our stories, photographs or other content without our written permission;
- use automated tools to copy the website in bulk, or to collect content to train software or artificial intelligence systems, without our written permission;
- try to break into the studio or any part of the website you are not meant to reach, interfere with its security, or overload it;
- use our forms to send spam, abuse, or anything unlawful.
We may block access for anyone who breaks these terms.
Our content and copyright
The stories, photographs, illustrations, design and other content on AVO belong to Digital Thread Proprietary Limited or to the contributors and photographers who created them, who have allowed us to publish their work. Where a work is credited to someone else, that person or organisation keeps their rights in it. The AVO name and logo belong to Digital Thread Proprietary Limited.
When you share an AVO story, please link to it on africasveryown.com and credit AVO and the writer. To republish a story or use a photograph, contact us through the Contact page.
If you believe something on AVO uses your work without permission, tell us through the Contact page, with enough detail for us to find it, and we will look into it promptly.
Ads
AVO shows ads from Google AdSense, which help pay for the magazine. Google chooses the ads; their appearance on AVO is not an endorsement by AVO or Digital Thread Proprietary Limited, and we are not responsible for advertisers’ products or websites. Ads never appear on sponsored stories.
Sponsored and partner content
AVO is independent. Some stories are paid for or supported by a brand or organisation. These are always labelled “In partnership with” and name the partner, so you can tell them apart from our own journalism. Partners can check facts about themselves but do not approve our stories, and have no say over our independent coverage. Our Sponsored content and partnerships policy explains how this works.
Pitches and contributions
Pitching a story through Write for AVO, and contributing work we publish, are covered by our Contributor Terms: what you promise us, editing, credit, payment, and the rights you keep and give us. We handle the personal details you send as described in our Privacy Policy.
The newsletter
The newsletter is free and for people aged 18 or over. You subscribe by entering your email address and confirming it, and you can unsubscribe at any time with the link in every edition. We may change how often it is sent or stop it.
Links and embedded content
AVO links to other websites and includes players from services such as YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud and Audiomack. We do not control those websites and services and are not responsible for their content or how they handle your information. Embedded players load only if you allow them; see our Cookie Policy.
Accuracy and corrections
We work to make our journalism accurate and fair. Stories reflect the information available when they were published and are not professional, financial, legal or medical advice. If you see a mistake, tell us through the Contact page, choosing Corrections, and we will look at it and correct it where we got it wrong.
Our responsibility to you
We provide AVO as it is and as available. We try to keep it working, but we cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. As far as the law allows, Digital Thread Proprietary Limited is not liable for any indirect loss or damage arising from your use of the website or reliance on its content. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have by law that cannot be limited, or our liability where it cannot lawfully be excluded.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when AVO changes. The date below shows when they last changed. If you keep using the website after a change, the new terms apply.
Law
These terms are governed by the laws of Botswana. This does not take away any protection you have under the consumer laws of the country where you live.
